B.C. Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett was reminded Wednesday morning that the proposed Ajax mine is dividing the community.

Mayor Peter Milobar said the community's concerns about the mine were among the points raised during a 15-minute meeting with the minister and his senior staff at the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference in Vancouver.

The "speed date" meeting didn't give the City contingent of the mayor, three councillors and head administrator much chance to go into depth talking about the Ajax mine proposal.

Coun. Ken Christian said the Kamloops group impressed upon Bennett that "we want him to be current on the file and up to speed with the changes the proponent is suggesting for their property."

Milobar said it was apparent the minister and his staff are well aware that the mine is looking to expand its original footprint and that people in the city and surrounding region want information.

"We were just making sure they're well aware of the community angst around the project, that there's a bit of uncertainty around the health issues, things like that - uncertainty what the new footprint will look like," he said.

"Really it's early days, so they don't have any more information to share with us either at this point. It was a good opportunity to touch base again and make sure the lines of communication are wide open."
